Puberty, Perimenopause, and Summer Camp - Oh My!

Girl Power Science News
Did you happen to catch the supermoon rise on Thursday night? It was absolutely breathtaking—and it felt like a perfect reminder of how much our bodies and lives move in meaningful cycles. That idea of cycles has been on my mind a lot lately as I’ve been immersed in conversations about both puberty and perimenopause.
I’m thrilled to share that I’m collaborating with one of the doctors on our medical advisory board, Dr. Kim Garfinkel, MD, to create a brand-new perimenopause workshop. We’ll be presenting it at a private venue at the end of January, and I’m excited to offer it to this community soon after. I’ve also been deep in learning mode—The Menopause Brain by Lisa Mosconi, PhD is an excellent, empowering read, and I recently listened to a fantastic talk called “You’re So Hot Right Now – Navigating Perimenopause” by Dr. Karen Adams from Stanford Medicine. I’ll link that recording for you at the end of this newsletter.

On the other end of the life-stage spectrum, I recently attended a fascinating talk by Dr. Megan Johnson called “Windows of Vulnerability and Opportunity – Puberty & Mental Health.” One surprising takeaway: she shared Bay Area data suggesting that puberty can now begin as early as age six. That really stopped me in my tracks, and I’m currently tracking down the studies she referenced so I can dig in more deeply. You can check out the talk for a limited time (link at the end of the newsletter).
The slower pace of summer = fun hands-on science projects.
Which brings me to summer camp—and why this work feels so connected right now. I’ve already started getting emails about camp for next summer, so I’ve updated our camp webpage with new themes and offerings. Now that my own daughter has just started high school, I’m more aware than ever of the knowledge I wish she’d had walking into this next chapter.
We’ll also be opening a limited number of weeks to the public once our private booking calendar begins to fill.
Girls ages 8–15 thrive when they get to be together with their friends in a supportive, unplugged, nature-based environment. Our camps blend meaningful body literacy mini-lessons in the treehouse with hands-on science experiments, team-building challenges, and plenty of unstructured time to hang out in Glen Canyon Park and beyond. It’s joyful, grounding, and deeply confidence-building.
From puberty to perimenopause, these conversations matter—and they’re all connected. I’m grateful to be walking this journey alongside you and your daughters.
If this newsletter resonates, please consider forwarding it to a friend who might benefit from these resources. Sharing is one of the most powerful ways we grow this community.

Happy New Moon, My inbox has been full this week with so many amazing moms asking for workshops before everyone heads off on summer adventures. I hear you. This time of year is a big transition for our daughters (and for us), and it’s worth supporting them with the tools they need before everything shifts. I’m offering the four topics moms are requesting the most and a bundle deal (save $50) when you register for both kids workshops. Feel free to email me at here if you have any questions. Go...
Happy Pink Full Moon, Our popular Girl & Grown-Up "Period Power" workshop is back on April 25th as well as our virtual "Pause Power" workshop on April 22nd. There’s something I keep noticing lately, in my students, in my daughter, and honestly… in myself too. Sleep deprivation. Our body literacy classes always begin with a check-in and a chance for students to draw a picture of their "inner weather report" in their journal. One of my students said they noticed a pattern. "I am always tired!"...
Happy Spring Equinox! My daughter turned 15 yesterday. And surprisingly…the hardest part wasn’t the cake, the guest list, or even the emotions. It was her wishlist. Think: itsy bitsy teeny weeny crop tops and micro skirts. The kind of clothes that make you pause as a parent—not because they’re “wrong,” but because they raise bigger questions. Just last week, after my talk at Burkes School (“Girl Power: Building Body Resilience”), a mom asked me: “How do you balance letting girls wear what they...
