🕹️ Digital Demon Hunters: A New Way to Teach Kids About Online Safety

This week, I tried something new with my students, and they were completely hooked.

Inspired by a recent talk from Dr. Lisa Damour and Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, I reimagined digital safety as something kids could actively fight back against:

Digital Demon Hunters 👾

Instead of just telling kids what not to do online, we gave them the power to recognize and defeat the “digital demons” they encounter every day.

Here are a few of their favorites:

🐍 Scroll Serpent
Trick: Wraps kids in its never-ending tail of videos, ads, and games—making them forget to play, create, or connect in real life.
Hunter Tool: Set screen-time limits and take movement breaks. Balance screen time with offline fun.

🐙 Clickbait Kraken
Trick: Uses flashy ads and fake “You won a prize!” messages to lure kids in.
Hunter Tool: Think before you click and learn to spot online tricks.

👤 Stranger Shade
Trick: Pretends to be a friend in games or chats to get personal information.
Hunter Tool: Never share personal info and always check with a trusted adult.

🐉 Comparison Chimera
Trick: Shows highlight reels of other people’s lives to make kids feel “less than.”
Hunter Tool: Talk about what’s real vs. curated online—and practice gratitude.

The best part?
Instead of feeling restricted or overwhelmed, kids felt empowered. They were excited to spot these “demons” in real life and even more excited that they knew exactly how to handle them.

This is the kind of practical, confidence-building work we'll do in Media Mindset: Healthy Digital Habits on June 6.

💛 Be Your Own BFF: Navigating Friendship Shifts

Saturday, May 9 | 10:00 am – 12:00 pm (3 spots left)
Drop-off workshop for kids

Friendships change, especially during puberty. But most kids are never actually taught how to navigate those changes.

In this empowering workshop, students will learn how to:
• Recognize healthy vs. unhealthy friendships
• Set clear, confident boundaries
• Stay grounded in their self-worth

We’ll use discussion, reflection, and anonymous “curiosity box” questions to explore real-life scenarios.

✨ Includes our interactive Mood Science Lab, where a color-changing experiment helps kids understand how emotions (and friendships) can shift, and how to respond with awareness.

5 Star Yelp Review:

"My daughter participated in Girl Power Science's "Be your own BFF" workshop and had such a wonderful time. It was a really great combination of talking to the girls about how to deal with difficult friendships while also doing fun projects. I especially love that she incorporated a peer-to-peer advice session to give the girls a chance to talk to each other about what they're going through. We have had a lot of conversations at home referring back to this session since. Reading the summary email that Konika sent out afterwards literally brought tears to my eyes - I know friend drama is a normal part of girlhood but I'm so grateful to have an extra resource to help us navigate." - Abby M.

🩸Virtual Girl & Grown-up Period Power

Wednesday, May 20 | 5 - 5:45 pm PST

Imagine a world where every child with a uterus felt strong, confident, and proud of their body’s inner superpowers.

In this “girl & grown-up” workshop, author Konika Wong reads One in a Million – A First Book About Periods and guides families through a fun, age-appropriate introduction to ovulation, menstruation, and all the amazing inventions we use to care for our bodies.

Through colorful visuals, interactive demos, and a hands-on science experiment, we’ll celebrate the power of our cycles together. The session will culminate with plenty of time for questions. Perfect for curious kids (ages 7+) and the grownups who love them. All genders welcome.

Investment: $40 (on sale; regularly $55)

📱 Media Mindset: Healthy Digital Habits

Saturday, June 6 | 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Giving your child their first device is a big milestone—and one that deserves preparation.

This workshop helps kids build a strong foundation before stepping into the digital world. Through interactive activities and guided discussion, they’ll learn how to:
• Navigate technology with awareness
• Respond to uncomfortable situations
• Build healthy screen habits
• Make thoughtful decisions online

We’ll also create mindful glitter jars—a tangible tool to help kids tune into their bodies and regulate screen use.

💫 Bundle Offer

Each workshop is $125 and includes a virtual parent education session via Zoom.

🌞 Summer Camp "Counselor in Training" Opportunity
We’re down to the last few openings, and a middle school mom had a great idea!

If your daughter is in middle school, she can register for camp as a camper and also participate as a volunteer Counselor in Training (CIT) during the session. This is a paid camp enrollment; the CIT role is an added leadership opportunity, not a substitute for tuition.

This opportunity includes:
• Building leadership skills
• Learning how to run a small business
• Possible recommendation letter for high school
• Early work experience

The moms at my daughter’s high school were talking about how hard it is to get a first job because experience is often required. My daughter got her first summer job thanks to her experience at GPS camp, and I’d love to offer that same opportunity to others.

I run all of our camps and have over two decades of experience teaching K–8. I was the Lower School Science Specialist at The Hamlin School for 16 years and am currently the Body Literacy Specialist at Red Bridge School.

July 20–24: You Grow Girl!Sold out
August 10–14: STEMinista — 3 spots left

As always, thank you for supporting our small business. You can easily spread the word about our program by sharing this link to our most recent newsletters with your friends: [LINK]

Happy New Moon, My inbox has been full this week with so many amazing moms asking for workshops before everyone heads off on summer adventures. I hear you. This time of year is a big transition for our daughters (and for us), and it’s worth supporting them with the tools they need before everything shifts. I’m offering the four topics moms are requesting the most and a bundle deal (save $50) when you register for both kids workshops. Feel free to email me at here if you have any questions. Go...

Happy Pink Full Moon, Our popular Girl & Grown-Up "Period Power" workshop is back on April 25th as well as our virtual "Pause Power" workshop on April 22nd. There’s something I keep noticing lately, in my students, in my daughter, and honestly… in myself too. Sleep deprivation. Our body literacy classes always begin with a check-in and a chance for students to draw a picture of their "inner weather report" in their journal. One of my students said they noticed a pattern. "I am always tired!"...

Happy Spring Equinox! My daughter turned 15 yesterday. And surprisingly…the hardest part wasn’t the cake, the guest list, or even the emotions. It was her wishlist. Think: itsy bitsy teeny weeny crop tops and micro skirts. The kind of clothes that make you pause as a parent—not because they’re “wrong,” but because they raise bigger questions. Just last week, after my talk at Burkes School (“Girl Power: Building Body Resilience”), a mom asked me: “How do you balance letting girls wear what they...
