Is Third Grade Too Young to Talk About Puberty?

Happy New Moon,

The most common questions I get from parents are: “When should I talk to my daughter about puberty?” and “When should I talk to her about the birds and the bees?”

I’m seeing more and more second and third graders at our workshops, which makes sense because the average age for the onset of puberty in girls is 8, and some girls begin as early as age 6. I’ve been a puberty educator for two decades, and in the past, parents often asked if third grade was too young. These days, I rarely get that question.

One of the gifts of starting these conversations younger is that children are often still naturally curious, open-hearted, and free from shame. It becomes much easier to frame puberty as something empowering and healthy before misinformation and social pressures begin to shape the narrative.

With easier access to social media and pornography—not to mention alarming statistics about child sexual abuse—it’s become clear that we need to arm our daughters with empowering information about their changing bodies and human sexuality early.

We have to reframe our mindset from thinking about teaching this content as a loss of innocence and instead realize that we are preserving their innocence. Children are much more likely to trust their gut and speak up when they have the knowledge that builds confidence.

Parents sometimes say their child doesn’t want to talk to them about this stuff, and I tell them it’s not personal. The pubertal brain remodel creates this distance from you by design. That’s where my daughter and I come in. It takes a village!

Our program design includes an anonymous curiosity box, plenty of peer-to-peer connection time, and parent education so you can take the positive momentum and deepen the conversations at home.

It’s encouraging to see this conversation gaining more mainstream attention as well. Dr. Cara Natterson and Vanessa Kroll Bennett, authors of This Is So Awkward: Modern Puberty Explained, were recently on the Today Show underscoring the importance of early puberty education. I’ll link the episode at the end.

Messages like this remind me why I do this work:

“My daughter and I, along with five other mothers and daughters we know, had the most wonderful time at Ms. Ray's CuriosiTea workshop. Our girls are 3rd graders, a mix of 8 and 9 years old, and I feel like we are now so prepared to face puberty with confidence and curiosity. Everything the kids are learning is supported by science, with a framework of empowerment and autonomy. Both kids and moms felt encouraged to ask questions and were met with enthusiasm and great insight from Ms. Ray. This workshop was worth every penny and then some.

You also can't beat the location. Not only is Ms. Ray's treehouse itself a breathtaking, almost magical-feeling location, but the neighborhood is awesome, too! I grabbed lunch with my daughter before the workshop, and then during the kids-only section, the moms and I took a long walk in the nearby canyon and grabbed coffee before coming back for the mom/daughter tea party and learning session. Our girls were all so proud to show off their crafts and what they'd learned, and I feel like all the moms learned something, too. It was also a fantastic bonding experience and made our community feel stronger, safer, and more loving for both us and our girls.

Ms. Ray does period workshops for dads, too! Whatever your need, she is an amazing resource and followed up with us afterward with even more helpful resources. This is a 10/10 experience, and I've recommended it to every mom I know.”

Here's a recent 5-star Yelp review:

“Konika's Period Power workshop was absolutely fantastic — for my daughter and for me! It sparked such meaningful conversations at home and gave us real language to talk about important changes she's going through.

What really stood out was how incredibly prepared and organized everything was. You could tell that Konika (and her daughter!) put enormous thought and care into every detail — from the snacks and cushions, to the visuals, the hands-on experiments, the community agreements, and the way the whole session was sequenced. Walking into a space where someone has thought of everything is such a gift. It allowed everyone to relax and be fully present.

I've already told multiple people about this workshop and appreciate the follow-up and carefully curated resources that Konika sends along afterward — highly, highly recommend!”

Happy Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse! 🌕✨ Did you miss me? I fully immersed myself in the joy of running an amazing four weeks of Girl Power Science summer camp. On the very last day of camp, my body decided it had had enough. I suddenly felt a sharp, excruciating abdominal pain and ended up in the hospital. I don’t know what was scarier, the actual pain or the fact that I had no health insurance due to a computer system error. 😳 Those of you who follow me on Instagram, @girlpowerscience, know all...
